Friends, classmates honor Emily Keyes on anniversary of her murder
BAILEY - Dozens of high school students, gather on the practice field at Platte Canyon High School outside Bailey on a sunny Friday morning.

Hammering nails into pre cut pieces of housing frame.

They call it building kindness, one house at a time.

Pitching in to help others in such a peaceful, scenic place to honor their classmate and friend, Emily Keyes.

"She was always one to help people out," said Emily's friend Cassie Rebeck who was at the school that day three years ago, "And if you needed someone to talk to she was there and you could tell her anything so I think she would definitely like this."

It's a good that springs from tragedy on that day three years ago

When a psychotic gunman held six female students hostage, taking Emily's life as police closed in.

They say emily is right here with them building the frame of a new home, so Tammy Marshall and her family can have a fresh start on life.

" They're honoring Emily by trying to make the community a better place and that's what I feel that the kids are doing right now," Tammy said while watching the pieces of her new home go together with her daughter Bobbie.

"I think that she'd be pretty proud that we're doing this as a school," said Lex Schindler, another friend of Emily's "That we were able to get take a day just out of our normal busy busy lives and be able to pull this all together."

"Since it is a smaller community we've all really bonded together," said Emily's best friend Natalie Gonzalez, "And this is definitely a huge project that I don't think we would have gotten involved in otherwise, and I'm really glad that we did. "

By giving back, they hope Emily's memory will always be positive.

Not clouded by what happened that day.

"That we're out here doing something good after such a tragic event and we're helping out a family that really needs help," said Cassie.

The fourth annual Emily's parade, begun the year she died, will kick off at Columbine High School Saturday morning with a brief ceremony and kickoff for the Columbine to Canyon motorcycle ride to Platte Canyon High 45 miles away.
