Buena Vista High School's Mason Finley has a big night ahead of him. Senior prom, and, a new national high school record to celebrate. Finley's discus throws just keep getting longer and longer, and Alamosa's High Altitude Challenge was the perfect place to make a statement.
With his latest effort, Finley pushes the new mark to an amazing 235 feet, six inches.
Earlier this season, when the UCLA signee threw the shot put 66 feet, 8 inches, he broke one of Colorado's longest-standing track and field records, set back in 1982.
Finley stands 6'8" tall and weighs in at 330 pounds and, is sure to draw a crowd when he competes in the state meet next month at Jefferson County Stadium. He'll throw the disc on Thursday May 11th, and the shot on Friday May 12th. Last year, when his state meet was held in Pueblo, the discus event had to be moved from the stadium to an area high school. Officials were afraid that his throw would land in the Arkansas River!
