ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. -
Commuters on 104th Avenue in Adams County ran into a surprise road closure Tuesday morning, and they had to find other ways to get to their destinations.
The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the bridge on 104th Avenue over the Platte River because engineers found significant deterioration of concrete on key parts of the bridge.
"In a recent inspection, we discovered that much of the concrete has deteriorated around the pier caps and girders along one span of the bridge," said CDOT bridge engineer Mark Leonard. "For the safety of the traveling public, we are closing the bridge to all traffic until we can make the appropriate repairs, which will include removing the deteriorated concrete and pouring new concrete to stabilize the bridge span."
The bridge is between U.S. Highway 85 and Colorado Boulevard. It sits between Thornton and Commerce City. CDOT spokeswoman Mindy Crane said traffic will be detoured to 88th Avenue from Colorado Blvd. as well as from Highway 85 and Interstate 76. It normally carries about 16,000 vehicles each day.
It will take about three weeks for CDOT to hire a construction company to do the work, and then it'll take at least two more weeks to complete repairs.
This bridge was already high on the list of bridges that needed significant work done to them.
