100 displaced for Christmas after Commerce City apt. complex evacuated
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Over 100 residents of a Commerce City apartment complex were forced from their homes on Christmas Day after several pipes burst in their building.

Police and firefighters responded to the Highland Legends Apartments at 7200 East 72nd Ave. at about 9:30 a.m. Friday on reports of flooding in one of the units. They found the building's boiler had malfunctioned and several pipes had ruptured as a result.

An untold number of units sustained water damage. No injuries were reported.

Residents of 48 units, more than 100 people, were evacuated as the broken boiler also caused electricity and heat to be shut down for the entire building.

Management relocated several families to vacant apartments in other buildings at the complex, but a majority of the evacuees were taken to Kearney Middle School where the Red Cross set up a shelter.

The school is located at 6160 Kearney St.

Repairs were expected to take all weekend and it's unclear how soon residents will be allowed to return home.
