Amazing photo of a small western kingbird riding on the back of an invading and much larger red-tail hawk. The little bird was pecking at the head of the hawk to make him leave the territory at Bonny Lake State Park near Burlington, Colorado. (Photo: Pat Gaines)
KIT CARSON COUNTY, Colo. -
A little guy takes on a big guy in a daring wild ride.
Pat Gaines snapped an amazing photo while bird-watching near the Colorado- Kansas border this summer.
It shows a little bird bullying a much larger red-tail hawk while both were in flight. The scene happened at Bonny Lake State Park, which is north of Burlington, Colorado, just west of the Kansas border.
Pat Gaines took the picture while watching the highly territorial western kingbirds harass the much larger red-tail hawks that were intruding on their space.
Gaines says the kingbird in this photo rode on the hawk's back for 25 yards pecking away at its head the whole time.
