Albertsons
DENVER, Colo. -
Albertsons says it will close supermarkets in Denver, Lafayette, Greenwood Village, Longmont and Arvada, and a distribution center in Aurora due to eroding profits.
"The stores identified have not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates, we have not been able to reposition them to better compete in the marketplace," Christine Wilcox, Albertsons Communications & Public Affairs Director, said in a statement Tuesday.
The 5 stores slated for closure are:
555 South Boulder Road West - Lafayette
1442 South Parker Road - Denver
8557 East Arapahoe Road - Greenwood Village
1750 North Main - Longmont
14605 West 64th Ave - Arvada
"With the closure of these stores, Albertsons will operate 26 stores in Colorado. We can achieve cost savings by centralizing our distribution operations to our Tolleson, AZ distribution center," Wilcox said.
The distribution center in Aurora will close around November. About 500 workers total will be affected. Michelle Baker works at the store on Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village.
"It's very sad that we have to deal with this. We found out about it at the last minute and they are going to try and place people in different areas," Baker said.
While employees look for new places to work, customers look for new places to shop.
"I think it's sad. It's been a neighborhood store for more than 20 years and it's definitely sad to see it close," customer James Sullivan said.
